Sodium
The element sodium is atomic number 11. It is soft, silvery white in color and belongs to the alkali metals group. Its symbol is shown as 'Na' in the periodic table. It got its symbol from the Latin word 'Natrium'.
Reacts violently with water, is explosive and oxidizes rapidly in air. Therefore, it should always be treated with caution. It should be kept in an environment free of contact with air and water, such as Vaseline, mineral oil or kerosene.
Sodium lighter than water can be cut with a knife at room temperature but is brittle at low temperatures. It easily conducts heat and electricity and shows the photoelectric effect (electron emission when exposed to light) to a significant degree.
People have known salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) and soda (sodium carbonate, Na2CO3) since prehistoric times. They used the first as a sweetener and preservative, and the second for the production of glass. However, the sodium element was found by Sir Humphry Davy at the Royal Institute of London in October 1807 by exposing caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) to electric current and obtaining sodium metal spheres.
