BARIUM
Barium element is shown with the "Ba" symbol. It is atomic number 56 and is in period 6 of group 2A of the periodic table, so it is an alkaline earth metal. It was discovered by Sir Humphry Davy in 1808. Its name comes from the Greek word "barys" which means "heavy".
Barium, which is solid at room temperature, has a white gray metallic appearance as an element. When metallic barium is burned, it turns apple green in color and is lead-soft. It has good thermal and electrical conductivity. It can also be made into wire and sheet.
Barium, calcium and strontium, which differ from other alkaline earth metals in terms of their properties; It decomposes water, releases hydrogen and forms hydroxide. When these hydroxides are heated, they lose water and turn into oxides. Although its carbonates decompose easily at heat, barium carbonate is the hardest decomposing compound. Sulphates do not dissolve in water. It is more volatile than other metals and can be distilled. In the form of barium, which is a highly active element; It can easily react with water, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, hydrogen, ammonia, halogens and acids. Keeping it in the presence of air and other oxidizing gases may cause violent reaction, therefore dangerous.
Barium is found in some minerals in nature. Barium, which is about 0.05 percent in the earth's crust, is 14th among the most abundant elements in nature. It is not found as an element due to its activity. Its minerals are generally seen in regions where hot water is available. It is found in algae, fish, some plants, soil and some foods.
