The scientist who discovered lutetium is Georges Urbain at the Paris Sorbonne. He was the first to announce the existence of the element. The period starting with erbium in 1843 and ending with lutetium in 1907 is called the discovery process of lanthanides. Until 1953, no sample of pure lutetium metal could be obtained.
Lutetium is one of the most difficult to obtain and does not have large-scale practical uses, although some of its radioactive isotopes can be used as a catalyst in the breakdown of petroleum products, and in some hydrogenation and polymerization processes.
