Potassium
Potassium is symbol 'K' and atomic number 19. It is in the 1A group of the periodic table, it is an alkali metal. It is indispensable for both plant and animal life. Potassium metal is soft and white, has a silvery luster, has a low melting point, and is a good conductor of heat and electricity. Solid potassium reacts violently with water. For this reason, it should be stored under mineral oil like kerosene, but it cannot be kept in this way for long.
Potassium is very important. It is found in all biological materials. Our body contains large amounts of potassium. Potassium deficiency in body fluid causes diarrhea and vomiting, with fatal consequences (hypokalemia). Muscle weakness, heartbeat abnormalities and circulatory disorders, reflex slowing and difficulty in breathing, weakness are serious disorders that can be seen as a result of potassium deficiency.
The best way to maintain potassium balance in the body is to eat a varied and balanced diet.
If you burn a garden waste, you can find potassium in the ashes. The word potash originally meant alkali obtained from burnt wood, tree leaf ashes, from which potassium was also named.
