Rubidium
The rubidium element takes its name from the Latin word rubidus, which means “the darkest red”. In 1861, when their explorers Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff looked at the spectrum of the element they separated, they saw two dark red lines that had not been seen before and named this element rubidium because of its color.
Rubidium, symbol Rb, atomic number 37, atomic weight 85.46, specific gravity 1.53, melting point 38.9 ° C, silvery-white, soft and highly reactive metallic element. It is in the 5th period in the 1A (alkali metals) group in the periodic table.
It is abundant in nature, but its production is limited. It is usually obtained as a by-product from lithium refining.
Rubidium nitrate is sometimes used to give fireworks a purple color.
It has a limited usage area other than scientific researches, that is, it is a metal with limited industrial use. The biggest reason for this is that it is an expensive metal.
It is used to clean oxygen residues in vacuum tubes, as well as for the production of special glasses and light-sensitive cells.
It is used as a degassing agent that removes trace gases in vacuum and cathode ray tubes. It is also used in the production of photocells. Rubidium is also used as a catalyst.
In addition, as it is easily ionized, it can be used as a propellant in ion powered spacecraft. A compound of rubidium, silver, and iodine, on the other hand, has interesting electrical properties and can be used in thin-film batteries.
All of the usage areas of rubidium are as follows;
Special glasses, heart researches, photocells, night vision devices, medical imaging devices, fiber optic cables, atomic clocks, thin film batteries, game consoles, laptops, cameras, special glasses, thermoelectric generators ...
+ Rubidium is more valuable than gold in world markets. The kilogram of rubidium is around 75 thousand dollars.
+ Rubidium reacts violently and exothermicly with water. So much so that the glass container used in this reaction can break.
+ It is claimed that much more energy can be produced with rubidium from alternative energy sources.
+ Rubidium, which is similar to potassium, is found in plants such as tobacco and beet, and mineral waters.
