Cesium
Cesium was discovered with rubidium by Bunsen and Gustav Kirchoff in 1860. It is an alkali metal with the chemical symbol "Cs". Its atomic number is 55 and its atomic weight is 132.90. Its periodic table is in the 1A group. It is gold, metallic and solid in room conditions.
Cesium is used in industry as a catalyst promoter that increases the capacity of organic compounds and the performance of other metal oxides in hydrogenation. Cesium nitrate is used in making optical glass. Cesium is sometimes used to remove traces of oxygen from vacuum tubes and light bulbs.
Cesium salts are used to strengthen various types of glass. Chloride is used in photoelectric cells, optical devices, and to increase the sensitivity of electron tubes. Cesium is used in atomic clocks and more recently in ion propulsion systems.
Cesium is used as a collector to combine and remove trace gases in vacuum and cathode ray tubes. It is also used in the production of photoelectric devices and atomic clocks. It is also used as a fuel in spacecraft with cesium ion propulsion engines due to its easy ionization property.
