URANIUM
Uranium is a radioactive element. Its symbol is "U". Its atomic weight is 238 and its atomic number is 92. Melting point 1132 ° C, boiling point; 3818 ° C Uranium is known to have natural isotopes such as U234, U235 and U238 and artificial isotopes such as U233, U236, U237 and U239. It was proved by Dimitri Mendeleev in 1896 that uranium is a radioactive element. Uranium gives a yellow-green color when it is added to glass. It is an element with high radioactivity. It has high density. It is softer than steel. It is easily oxidized and burns when heated.
Today's most important nuclear energy raw materials are uranium and thorium. Uranium is never found freely in nature. It combines with various elements to form uranium minerals. There are hundreds of uranium minerals in the earth's crust; however, most of them do not contain economically viable uranium. It is a highly dangerous radioactive element used in nuclear power plants. This resource, which has widespread reserves around the world, is not easily sold or transferred like other mines because of its very serious dangers.
Uranium, the raw material of the atomic bomb, is one of the basic metals that make up the effect of the tragic bombings in Japan. The fact that uranium is an element that takes place through a chain reaction of nuclei and when this reaction occurs, it emits an incredible energy. It was used in the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Usage areas:
Military Usage: Uranium is used in this field of military use due to its high impact rate, density, hardness and non-flammable element. It is used in making armor in tanks and other armored vehicles, providing weight in aircraft in the aviation field and making shields.
Industrial Area Usage: The main field of use of uranium is nuclear. 1 kilogram of uranium-235 can produce up to 20 terajoules of energy. When a complete fusion takes place, energy equivalent to 1.5 million kilograms of coal can be produced.
Making ceramic and marble emerges as an intermediate. The countries with the most reserves of uranium, which is used for various purposes in medicine and modern agriculture, are; It is ranked as America, Russia and China. Although there are five uranium deposits in Turkey as well, not yet started active work on these mines.
